CHAPTER 8

Veidimenn Deild

“OR,” MOTHY SAID WITH a blatant firmness, “we can be extra friendly so they know we’re good and they will be our friends.” Wolflock yelped as Mothy squeezed his hand. “I know you’re stressed. I am too. There are too many things around here that are so dangerous. We have friends though. Khra hasn’t eaten us yet and his horse ran away from you. That’s a good sign, right?”

“I suppose so.”

“You’re just rattled. Come sit in the carriage. At least it’s warded.”

Mothy steered Wolflock into the compartment and closed the door with a snap. They sat down in their seats and, at the same time, heaved a sigh, relaxing their shoulders. Inside, the carriage felt safe. The cleaned windows let in the lovely warm sunlight and the protected room kept it like a plush greenhouse.

“Warding the carriage-”

“Was the best idea we’ve had so far on this trip,” Wolflock finished Mothy’s sentence, and they broke out into laughter.

“How are we going to survive university?”

Wolflock wiped his eyes, leaning back into the corner of the seat and the wall. “By the tips of our wits.”

“And the charm of our tongues,” Mothy added.

“And by the luck the gods left behind.”

The urge between them to clink teacups or tankards lingered, but they didn’t have anything on them. A silent promise to complete their pledge when they next had a drink in hand filled the air between them.

They relieved the pressure of the day by talking about what they thought Mystentine University would be like, the classes they’d take, and the people they’d meet. The thoughts of the future brought them hope and a renewed energy. In the mid-afternoon, they took a nap in the sun and woke to the cool, dusky air.

“Can you smell that?” Wolflock took a deep breath, tasting the humidity.

“The impending doom night-time brings on this road?” Mothy chuckled, stretching awake.

“It’s going to snow.”

“Well, if any horse can get through it, it’s yours.” Blandt opened the door and sat next to Wolflock.

Unlike the night prior, Wolflock didn’t relinquish his seat. He kept his leg on the seat, bending his knee only a little to give Blandt room to sit down. The half vampire sat down and brought his knee up, pressing against Wolflock’s as they battled for the seat.

The snow fell as the pink sunset cast shadows between the trees and snowflakes. Khra’s horse had no issue tearing through the snow and ice over the road. Her hooves cut through the ground, ripping the ground up and propelling them forward at tremendous speed. Occasionally, between the conversation that Blandt encouraged, Wolflock would glance out of the window. The black figure made of cloth and shadow flashed between the trees, keeping pace with them. He had to tell himself that it was just the shadows cast by his new wineglass lantern. Nothing more. Though, Mothy’s glances at the windows made him think his friend saw the same thing.

Blandt, instead, appeared bright and chatty, telling them about the eight apprentices when Volseggir brought them to the guild and how their skills made the guild feel more like home.
